Captive Bible Study Kit

Hi Friends! I’m so glad you are joining us for this new study, Captive. If you’re human, you’ve probably encountered times in life where you feel worried or anxious. Some of us struggle with this more than others, but none of us are immune. In my own struggles I know I’ve dealt with shame and guilt over those anxieties, which led to more anxiety rather than helping alleviate it. Doesn’t Scripture tell us not to worry after all? Certainly it does, but what if we began to see that as an invitation to relationship with Jesus rather than a command to never feel worried. It wasn’t until I began to see that Jesus wanted to meet me in the midst of my worries, to hold me, and care for me when anxiety overwhelmed, that I was able to have more grace and patience for myself. It was truly peace-giving to understand that Jesus wasn’t mad at me when I couldn’t control my anxiety, rather he wanted to come close to me, hold me, and speak truth to my heart.

One thing that helped me to receive this truth was beginning to memorize scripture and repeat it to myself when anxiety reared it’s ugly head. Secular culture is all about the positive affirmations, but the affirmation of scripture is so much more powerful than anything else. When we can meet with Jesus in our anxiety, we can take the anxious thoughts captive through him.

So for this study, we are going to spend 6 weeks memorizing 6 scriptures. These scriptures are great ways to meet with Jesus in your anxiety. –Leah
